The 2015 Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) Day on the Hill was attended by four students from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. This annual event is held in Harrisburg, PA, Pennsylvania’s state Capitol, where practicing dentists and students alike lobby for rights among the profession. The day starts at a local hotel where students are paired with dentists prior to briefing. Complimentary buses transport students from Penn, Temple and Pittsburgh to the Harrisburg location. While enjoying a continental breakfast, pairings are educated and briefed on advocacy issues important to the profession. Of highlight to legislative issues in 2015 were dental student loan forgiveness, assignment of benefits, retroactive insurance reviews, and funding for the adult medical assistance program. After briefing, buses transported all participants to the state Capitol where a detailed schedule directed each pairing to their appointments with legislatures. After a busy and successful morning a rally was held to celebrate and emphasize and day’s goals. All were transported back to the hotel to enjoy refreshments, lunch and the dental career expo providing information from residencies to insurance to practice management. The day was a wonderful experience for all! We hope to increase the participation of Penn students in 2016 to actively participate and make a difference in issues pertinent to our current and future profession.
